What are some cosplay ideas?

I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff. This will be my first time doing anything related to cosplay. I'm going to Sakura-con so i want it to be AWESOME!! However, i'm not sure who to go as. Any suggestions?

I'm not built, a little tubby around the gut, but not too bad and i'm 6'. So i can't do Yusake Yurameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho, or Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop, OR Van from Gunsword which sucks.... I really wanted to go as Al Elric from FMA, but if i went as him i'd want to do metal costume, not fabric, cardboard, or paper. I have around $1500 saved for this right now so money isn't really a problem..... Also i hung around the idea of chad from Bleach but then i'd have to get a tan and ugh....too much work.....

So please, need help!

First off, Sakura Con is AWESOME! This next year will be my 5th year attending. Anyway, I'm glad you're really trying to put lots of effort into your costume. ^^

For Al, instead of metal, you should try goldyboard. It's supposed to be really amazing for mecha-type cosplays and it lighter. Probably cheaper too. http://shop.cosplay.com/announce-goldyboard/
